What is looksmaxxing? The meaning, the slang and the scale

Last updated: October 2026

Looksmaxxing means improving your appearance on purpose, as far as it can go. The word joins "looks" and "maxxing", gaming slang for pushing a stat to its maximum. It started on online forums where men rated faces on a strict scale and compared what changed their scores, and it spread through TikTok and YouTube to the point where the slang is now everyday language.

At its sensible end it is grooming, skin care, a good haircut, getting lean and learning how to take a photo. At its extreme end it is surgery and risky do-it-yourself methods. Most of the value is at the sensible end.

Why everyone is searching it now

South Park took on looksmaxxing in October 2026. The episode "You Like That On Your Face" (season 29, episode 3, first aired October 14 on Comedy Central) satirizes looksmaxxing and aura farming, with Ike in a live-streamed aura battle against a looksmaxxing kid named Chad. Searches for looksmaxxing and its slang jumped the next day, so here is what the words actually mean.

Softmaxxing vs hardmaxxing

Some trends online sit outside both columns: hitting your own face to change the bone, extreme dieting, unregulated drugs. They do real damage and change nothing a photo can show. Skip them.

Looksmaxxing slang, explained

Canthal tiltThe angle from the inner to the outer eye corner. Positive means the outer corner sits higher.
AuraSlang for presence and cool, gained or lost by what you do. "Minus a thousand aura."
Aura farmingDoing something that looks effortlessly cool, usually on camera, to collect aura.
Aura battleTwo people trying to out-aura each other, often filmed or streamed, as in the South Park episode.
AscendTo move up the scale through looksmaxxing. The opposite of staying where you started.

How the PSL scale works

PSL runs from 1 to 8, not 1 to 10, and it is centred on 4, so a PSL rating comes in lower than a casual rating of the same face. It reserves the top bands for faces where everything is balanced at once: a single strong feature on an average structure still reads as a 4 or a 5. Each band has its own page on the PSL scale, and the free PSL score test places your face on it from one selfie.

Where to start, safely

  1. Get a baseline: one front-facing photo at eye level in even light, rated the same way each time.
  2. Find the biggest fixable trait. For most people that is body fat, skin, hair and grooming, not bone.
  3. Work on one thing for a few weeks before judging it. Skin and body fat change slowly.
  4. Retest with the same setup. A different camera or light gives a different number on the same face.
  5. Keep it a tool, not an identity. If it is making you feel worse, step back from it.
