How to looksmax in 2026: a realistic plan
Last updated: May 2026
TL;DR. Looksmaxing is the practice of intentionally improving how you look — skin, hair, body, grooming, photo skill — instead of leaving it to luck. The cleanest plan is: get an honest baseline rating, attack the lowest-scoring traits first, retest every few weeks. ChadMe’s free PSL-style rating gives you the baseline + breakdown to target effort.
What is looksmaxing?
Looksmaxing (or “looksmaxxing”) is the deliberate, often gamified pursuit of improving your appearance — usually framed around traits people score 1–10 (jawline, eyes, skin, symmetry, frame, hair). It overlaps with self-improvement, fitness and grooming, with a more direct vocabulary.
Softmaxxing vs hardmaxxing
- Softmaxxing — non-invasive: skin, hair, grooming, body composition, posture, sleep, photo skill.
- Hardmaxxing — invasive or aggressive: surgery, dental, jaw procedures. Higher risk, slower, expensive.
For 99% of people the right answer is to softmax to the ceiling first and only then even consider anything harder.
Step-by-step: how to looksmax
- Get a baseline AI face rating. Per-trait scores tell you which features are dragging the average down. Skin, hair and frame are usually the easiest to move; bone structure is the hardest.
- Fix skin first. Simple AM/PM routine: gentle cleanser → moisturizer → daily SPF. Most people’s skin score improves within 4–8 weeks.
- Upgrade hair + grooming. Better cut, cleaner edges, eyebrows in line. A good barber + trimmer is the single highest-ROI looksmax purchase.
- Lean down or recomp. Body fat in roughly the 12–15% range for men makes jawline, eyes and frame all read sharper.
- Build neck, traps, shoulders. These do more for face perception than people expect — they re-anchor your jawline and shoulders.
- Train photo skill. Consistent angle, light, expression. Most “my photos look worse than my mirror” complaints are camera literacy, not face shape.
- Retest every 2–4 weeks under the same conditions. If a score didn’t move, the intervention probably didn’t either.
What about mewing, jaw exercises, etc.?
Mewing and jaw-strength tools are popular in the looksmax community but their actual impact on adult facial structure is debated and slow at best. They’re fine as low-cost extras, but build the routine above first — those steps move scores reliably while the jawline-curveballs run in the background.
How to keep it grounded
- One score from one photo isn’t you. Use the average of multiple sessions.
- Skin, sleep and body fat will move scores more than anything labeled “alpha”.
- Your self-worth doesn’t live in a 1–10 number. The number is just a focus tool.
