Best hairstyles for your face shape (men): measured, not guessed

Every face shape guide starts with "look in the mirror and decide", which is how most men end up with the wrong shape and the wrong cut. Your shape is four numbers: how long the face is against its width, how wide the jaw is against the cheekbones, how wide the forehead is against the cheekbones, and how sharp the jaw corner is. The six shapes and what decides them

The principle behind every recommendation is balance: add visual length to a face that reads wide, add width to a face that reads long, add angle to a soft jaw, and soften a sharp one only if you want to. Hair does it at the top, a beard does it at the bottom, glasses do it across the middle.

Oval

Most cuts work, which is why stylists call it ideal. Keep some height on top and a moderate fade; avoid a heavy straight fringe, which shortens the face into round. Beard: whatever you like, kept off the neck. Glasses: almost any frame; squarer frames add a little structure.

Round

Add length and angle. Height on top (a quiff, a textured crop with volume, a pompadour), tight sides, and a side part that breaks the symmetry of the circle. Avoid width at the cheeks and bowl shapes. Beard: a short beard shaped along the jaw with a clean neckline gives the angle the bone does not. Glasses: rectangular or angular frames, not round ones.

Square

You have the jaw everyone else is trying to fake, so the job is not to overpower it. Texture and a little length on top soften the corners; a crew cut or buzz keeps the whole thing angular, which some men want. Beard: tight stubble or a short beard keeps the jaw the feature; a big beard makes a box. Glasses: round or oval frames balance the angles.

Oblong

Add width, remove height. Keep the top low and the sides fuller, no high fades, no pompadours. A fringe shortens the face. Beard: a full beard, kept fuller at the sides than at the chin, shortens and widens the lower face; a long chin beard does the opposite. Glasses: wide frames with some depth.

Heart

Balance the wide forehead and the narrow chin. Medium length with some weight at the sides and a fringe or side sweep that covers part of the forehead; avoid volume on top and slicked back styles that expose the width. Beard: a full beard at the jaw adds the width the chin lacks, and it is the shape where a beard changes the most. Glasses: frames wider at the bottom or rounded, not top-heavy.

Diamond

Widen the forehead and the jaw around the cheekbones. A fringe or a fuller top widens the upper face; keep the sides moderate rather than skin tight. Beard: a beard widens the narrow jaw; keep it fuller at the corners. Glasses: frames with a strong brow line or oval frames; avoid narrow ones.

Two things a face shape does not tell you

Hairline and hair density. A receding hairline changes the visible upper third regardless of shape, and thin hair cannot hold the height that the round and oblong advice depends on.
