What the jawline test measures

A front photo shows width and corner angle. It does not show chin projection or the true gonial angle, which need a side profile: a jaw can be wide and square from the front and still recede in profile. Judge the front first, then the side.
How the test measures the jaw
A face landmark model traces the jaw through twenty points from one ear to the other. The test levels the head, corrects for a small turn or a camera off eye level (a low camera is the classic way to fake a jawline in a photo, and the correction takes most of it back), then measures the angle at each jaw corner and the width between them.

What makes a jawline read strong
Three things, in order of how much they show. Definition: the sharpness of the edge between jaw and neck, which is body fat under the chin and skin tone, not bone. This is the part that changes with weight and the part a landmark test cannot see. Width: the distance between the jaw corners, which is bone and the masseter muscle. Angle: how square the corner is, which is bone. Most people who want a better jawline need the first one, and it responds to fat loss faster than anything else on the face.
Mewing, chewing and the jawline
Chewing hard gum grows the masseter and widens the jaw slightly over months; it does not change the bone. Mewing (tongue posture) has no measured effect on adult jaw bone. Fat loss under the chin changes how a jaw reads within weeks and is the only thing in this list that shows up in a photo reliably.

How to get an accurate measurement
- Camera at eye level, at arm's length or further. A low camera lengthens the chin and widens the jaw; a high camera shrinks them.
- Even light from the front. A window behind you or a lamp above you puts shadows exactly where the landmarks are.
- Face the camera straight on with a neutral expression, mouth closed, hair off the forehead.
- No filters, no beauty mode, no crop that cuts the chin or the ears.
- Use the same setup when you compare two photos. Different setups produce different numbers on the same face.
Facial hair along the jaw hides the edge from the landmark model. Trim it or accept that the trace follows the beard line.

Why does my jaw look wider in some photos?
